Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet, SLU ISES 2010 tar helhetsgrepp om häst och ryttare 2010-05-17

Hästens välfärd och ryttarens säkerhet blir en röd tråd genom hela programmet när ISES 2010, 6th International Equitation Science Conference, arrangeras för sjätte gången sommaren 2010.    Förra året var Australien värdland, denna gång är det Sverige. Arrangör är Hippologenheten vid SLU (Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet). I tre dagar, 31 juli till 2 augusti, kommer veterinärer, etologer, forskare, ridlärare, tränare,  företagare med flera att träffas i Uppsala och på Strömsholm och diskutera hur utbildning och träning av häst och ryttare kan göras på bästa sätt. - Det här är ett växande område inom forskningen och det känns spännande att få samla så många kunniga personer med olika kompetenser från hela världen, säger Mari Zetterqvist Blokhuis, en av arrangörerna bakom ISES 2010. Vetenskapliga konferenser är normalt bara en angelägenhet för forskare och studenter, men ISES-mötet är öppet också för ”vanliga” ryttare, ridlärare och andra intresserade från hästvärlden.  De får chansen att lyssna på en rad kända och mycket erfarna specialister som kommer att föreläsa samt hålla clinics. Två av de mest kända inbjudna internationella profilerna i programmet är Andrew Mc Lean från Australien och professor Rene van Weeren från Holland. McLean är utbildad etolog (specialist på djurs beteende) och har disputerat på hästars inlärning, specifikt på hur man tränar dem för ridsport. Van Weeren är en av världens ledande forskare inom hästens biomekanik och leder/senor, inte minst på unghästar.  Han har varit konsult till internationella ridsportförbundet FEI i den omtvistade rollkurfrågan. Andrew Mc Lean driver ett stort utbildningscenter i sitt hemland där han tränar hästar och ryttare inom såväl hoppning, dressyr, fältttävlan som galopp. Inom samtliga dessa grenar har han själv egen erfarenhet som ryttare upp till svår klass. Sin arbetsmetod, bland annat med problemhästar, har han beskrivit i ett antal böcker.   FOKUS PÅ UNGHÄSTAR På ISES 2010 är Andrew Mc Lean en av två inledningstalare. Den andre är veterinär Lars Roepstorff, verksam vid SLU, som har en mycket bred erfarenhet av hur hästar i olika åldrar ska tränas för bästa hållbarhet.  Roepstorff och Rene van Weeren deltar båda i ett internationellt forskningsprojekt om underlag, träning och hållbarhet. Flera föredrag och clinics under konferensen kommer att ha fokus på den unga hästens utbildning. Företrädare från såväl Flyinge som Strömsholm berättar hur de rider in unghästar och hur de utbildar ryttare. Ett viktigt budskap är att unghästar alltid ska hanteras av rutinerade tränare eller ryttare, medan unga ryttare i första hand ska rida äldre utbildade hästar. Konferensen hålls vid SLU i Uppsala och på Strömsholm. Förutom föredrag och diskussioner hålls praktiska demonstrationer, bland annat om ryttarens sits och inverkan vid ridning. ISES 2010 vänder sig i första hand till forskare, tränare, ryttare, företagare och representanter från olika myndigheter. Sammanlagt kommer det att ges ett 30-tal muntliga presentationer, samt ett 40-tal posters att fördjupa sig i. Second Announcement – Call for abstracts

International Society for Equitation Science

6th Annual International Conference
ISES Sweden 2010, Saturday 31 July – Monday 2 August, 2010

Equine scientists, veterinarians, industry leaders, policy makers, practitioners, and coaches including other professionals involved in training and caring for horses are welcome to meet in Uppsala for the 6^th International Equitation Science Conference, held at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science) and the Swedish National Equestrian Centre Strömsholm (RS).

The overall theme for this year’s conference - ‘Horse welfare and human safety: importance of learning, training and education’ aims to address how an interdisciplinary approach of learning, training and education can benefit the welfare of both horse and human.

The conference combines keynote lectures and short presentations along with practical demonstrations to strengthen the bridge between academia and practice.

Abstracts presenting both theoretical and empirical work related to Equitation Science and addressing the overall conference theme and sub-themes are invited and will be considered for presentation in form of oral or poster contributions.

Horse welfare and human safety: importance of learning, training and education

Sub-themes are intended to cover a variety of topics such as:

·       Human-horse interaction, i.e. matching horse and human, measuring humans’ signals and horses’ responses and vice versa

·       Biomechanics and physiology of the horse and its importance for understanding and improving training methods

·       Breed and genetic differences in relation to equitation, i.e. the horses’ predispositions for different disciplines, and personal ability

·       The use of gadgets in horse training

·       Education of trainers, instructors and coaches, i.e. didactics and how learning outcomes can be measured

·       The jungle of terminology – how can we improve communication within and between disciplines and cultures

·       Safety aspects in equitation

·       Welfare aspects of horses in different disciplines, i.e. tools to assess welfare parameters such as distress, pain, fatigue, recovery, and conflict behaviours

Preliminary programme

Saturday:      Comparative aspects in humans and horses: On the mental and physical capacity for training and learning

Sunday:        Equitation in practice: Training horses and teaching riders

Monday:       Human safety and horse welfare

Invited speakers will contribute with plenary presentations, including:

·       Andrew McLean (Australian Equine Behaviour Centre): Why do humans and horses behave as they do - can we improve the training and receive better learning, performance, welfare and understanding?

·       Lars Roepstorff (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences): Comparative aspects on physical capacity for training - how do different organs and tissues adapt to training

·       Marie Rhodin (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences): Terminology - from a biomechanical perspective

·       Human safety and horse welfare - two sides of the same coin (speaker not confirmed)

Practical sessions will cover presentations from:

·       Swedish National Equestrian Centre Strömsholm: Demonstration of the stepwise education of the rider (teaching)

·       National Stud Flyinge: Education of the young horse (training)

·       Lars Roepsdorff, Karin Morgan: Demonstration of ongoing research in 'Equitation'

·       Mari Zetterqvist Blokhuis, Marianne Essen Söderberg: The rider's seat: Training and balance - how this affects the horse

There will be poster sessions during the coffee breaks. Further details, including the final programme of speakers will be announced.
